Our Inspiration

The inspiration for Chapter One Organics was my Grandma and Grandpa Murphy. They didn’t have much money but they had big hearts and a lot of love to give. After their six children were grown and out of the house they decided to take on more! Grandma liked them small. She volunteered to take in foster children from birth to nine months (before they could talk or walk!). Within a two year span, she cared for 52 foster babies and adopted one of them. The year they passed away was also the year of the birth of my second child. My life changed and I needed to positively impact the lives of others.

I had a love for fashion at a young age, served on a fashion advisory board and modeled for a department store in high school, dabbled in design in college but through the wisdom of my parents decided I needed to get a good grasp on business. I spent many years fine tuning those business skills including a long stint in retail management and finally have returned to my passion. I molded my life experiences and talents together with my passion to found Chapter One Organics.

Our mission is to produce modern, fun baby and toddler clothes from sustainable fabrics and to create green jobs for women facing significant barriers to employment, providing a fresh start for the future!

Our Manufacturer

Chapter One Organics works with a U.S. manufacturer to make our organic baby clothes. This manufacturer has training programs in place to help women that have significant barriers to employment. These individuals learn new skills and productive work habits, earn fair wages, and establish careers.

One of their teaching sites is at a minimum security prison in the Midwest. The hope being that when they are released there will be a green job opening for them. The manufacturer has also hired women outside the prison system who had neither skills nor prospects for jobs with a career potential. Now they are working, learning and able to care for their families.

Typical responses when asked about their training, included:
“This is the biggest paycheck I have every received.”
“I want to break the cycle of poverty for my children.”
“I want my children to be the generation without burgers and fries.”

Some of these women have recognized that their new skills have given them the ability and self-confidence to begin businesses of their own.
One of the women has applied for a vendor’s license so she can sell her handmade animals, scarves, and hats at craft fairs.
As the demand for Chapter One Organics organic baby clothes increases, the manufacturer will be able to hire additional workers. We LOVE being a part of this uplifting program.
